...She'll ask and you give her: lips like sugar, sugar kisses; lips like sugar, sugar kisses. Part four in my ribbon write-ups.( At Anime Expo in 2003, I handed out ribbons that simply said Otaku... And Tadao went to Demicon in 2004... )
I mentioned that in 2004, people started asking me to have ribbons made for them. colleency told me that she and obishawn would be meeting friends from Road Squadron (the small group of people with Star Wars-decorated cars) and Trade Federation (the large group of people who collect and swap around info on Star Wars toys) f2f when they went to the Star Wars "Celebration" in Indianapolis. I don't recall exactly -- was it my idea to make up ribbons because I thought Shawn would get a kick out of them? Or did Shawn and Colleen ask me for them? It doesn't matter much; in any event, I went around twice on these, because the prototypes I had made weren't the right color combinations. The art turned out nice though.
Typefaces: Star Jedi for the Road Squadron, Felix Titling for Trade Federation. I think Shawn asked for these, and then when he sent me the "Star Jedi" typeface I turned around and surprised colleency with a "Star Wars Chicks" ribbon using the same font. Maybe. That was two years ago and I didn't keep specific notes on the wherefores of these things.
( Beefcake was a suggestion that caprine made, in reaction to the Cheesecake ribbons... )

...She knows what she knows. I know what she's thinking. Sugar kisses, sugar kisses... Part five of the ribbon backstory. Our story continues in 2005. ( A week before the year started, Michael Mason died. Christian suggested a memorial ribbon... )
( Hall Costume Award Nominee has a slightly interesting history behind it... )
The two levels of ribbons, or three once we got the rosettes, allowed the roving judges to do something comparable to "first place, second place, third place" and give the higher-class ribbon/rosettes to the stand-out efforts. At this time, both of these styles are kept in the "Animé Los Angeles Ribbons" bins.
Typefaces: It's all Clarendon Condensed and Clarendon Extended.
( I had some ordinary red and gold ribbons printed up with Space Cadet, Space Cadette, and Space Cadet Recruiter... )

...Just when you think she's yours, she's flown to other shores to laugh at how you break... Part Six. More fancy ribbons from 2005. ( Evil Smof are handy for a number of sf conventions. I had some stock roman Good Smof ribbons... )
( I (heart) Yaoi was one of the more persistent requests I got from the anime fans... )
Meanwhile, in 2005 esprix wanted "queer as fen" ribbons. The "queer as folk" tv show is popular enough that in Boston at Noreascon 4, someone was passing around "queer as fen" badge stickers. (And he was marveling that he wouldn't have believed it if 18 years before someone had told him people would be running around with the word "queer" on their badges at the 2004 Worldcon.) Alan wanted a ribbon like this. He only asked for a few, though, so I expect he's run out of them by now.
Typefaces: I wanted to use a typeface for the official Animé Los Angeles ribbons that wouldn't look anything like all the silly ribbons I'd been printing with Clarendon, so I went with Gill Bold Extended (I believe; something from the Gill family, anyway). The "queer as fen" might be the same typeface in lower case; I couldn't find an exact match to the tv show's typography, but we came pretty close. I'll have to double-check if that's a couple of Gill typeface weights or not. And the musical note on DJ -- is that Wingdings? I'm getting tired, and I need to research this stuff some more...

...And melt into this lake. You'll flow down her river but you'll never give her... The seventh ribbon-story installment. Here's some art I never used -- I had the ribbons printed with ordinary text, but haven't given away enough of them to warrant a new order with the custom art.
LASFS Member/Death Will Not Release You. ( These were ribbons that I originally ordered in yellow with black, which is when the ladies working the ribbon-stamping machine in Tuscon started cussing my name... )
Now, if a LASFS member wanted LASFS ribbons, we could get some made up, and we could make them look like the art here (or not). We wouldn't get yellow/black, though, unless we went through some other company. (Piggyback on the laconiv order going into Hodges, perhaps? You're not going to get me phoning up Parker, I can tell you that...) And as it happens, it seems that the LASFS table at the Worldcon this year won't be doing ribbons, so there's no great rush to look into this.
( The two great fannish ghods, Ghu and FooFoo, always in opposition... )
( Roscoeism and Herbangelism are more consistently observed. Roscoe is the third fannish deity, a great beaver that comes to us in a flying saucer and whose birthday is the first Monday in September... )

...Lips like sugar, sugar kisses; lips like sugar, sugar kisses. She'll be my mirror...
( Glomping, if you didn't already know it, refers to the running-jumping-tackling sort of hug. )
I myself am a third generation fan; while my father took the bus from his house in Brooklyn to go the World Science Fiction Convention that was held in loose conjunction with the World's Fair (he was 11 and didn't blip anyone's radar, so his name isn't in the books), and he once had lunch with John W. Campbell; his father read and collected Edgar Rice Burroughs and H.G. Wells. So you might say I come by it naturally.
Typefaces for all of these: Clarendon Condensed, Clarendon Bold, or Clarendon Extended.
