...The Hendersons will dance and sing as Mr. Kite flies through the ring. Don't be late... Ribbon update. Fifty people have asked me to order ribbons for them, totaling over ten thousand ribbons. I don't intend to spend most of my Worldcon trying to chase them all down. Instead, I've budgeted for postage, and will mail them out just as quickly as they come in.
A thousand of the new ribbons -- the first batch -- arrived Friday, and I turned them around and sent them off to their recipients. (If you're listening, and you ordered fancy ribbons, may I share the artwork here?) Plain and fancy ribbons received and re-sent include Broad Universe, Libertarian Futurist Society, Spice Cadet, Squid Lover, and the new Shake Hands Fan ribbons. (They look just like the previous fancy Shake Hands Fan ribbons, except they're maroon/silver instead of maroon/copper.) I've sent those off to Tadao, so he'll have them in time for Demicon. All the new ribbons are very shiny pretty, and so far everyone's agreed to let their ribbons be used in the Unofficial Ribbons Exhibit.
Speaking of Demicon, it should come as no surprise that I won't be attending. I'll be in the general neighborhood, as I leave Wednesday on another week-long trip for Tulsa, but I'm not going to take a side trip into Iowa this time. It was too grueling a trip last time. Not the trip up, but coming back Sunday night/Monday morning was just horrible. So I'll be at the Embassy Suites in Tulsa down where the freeways cross (Broken Ankle Hwy and the other one) when I'm not at our Tulsa Engineering Office. They have wi-fi in the lobby (or in the room for $10/day) so I'll be checking in if you need to reach me. Or call me on the Mangy-phone. I've got a new laptop to break in get used to; I've got new development hardware to play with; and the future of my employer's product line rests in my hands. No pressure, though.
Part Nineteen of ribbons I have known. These are all plain typeset ribbons, most of them in ALL CAPS; but see also notes about the new ribbons ordered.
- NEW YORK IN '95
- Timebinders
- BASFA
Michael Mason wanted NEW YORK IN '95 ribbons in time for Noreascon 4 in 2004, to hand out as a memorial to Robt. Sacks. He ordered a lot of them -- I expect there are hundreds in his effects somewhere, waiting for the family to stumble across them.
Joyce Scrivner asked for "Timebinders" ribbons in 2005, to hand out to people on the TIMEBINDERS mailing list. She ordered 500 of them, so I expect she still has a few.
Ed Stokke wanted BASFA ribbons to hand out at Further Confusion in San Jose, January 2006. kproche and bovil vouched for him; I mailed them the ribbons and had Ed give them the money. The next time they had something to pay me for (see below), they added in his money too and we were all square.
The BASFA ribbons were printed using RV Awards's gothic (that is, sans-serif) large capital block letters, which I rather like. You can't fit more than 7 letters on a ribbon, though, so there's a limit to what it's good for. If you use their serif letters, you can fit more on the ribbon, because it's a more condensed font; it looks a lot better in upper/lower-case. They like to say that you can fit "Committee Member" and nothing much longer than that. (But you can have two lines.) Fairly easy to remember.
- Lather, Rinse, Repent!
- MINION
- LAB RAT
kproche and bovil ordered "Lather, Rinse, Repent!" in 2004, and again in 2006, as part of the "Great Washed" pledge.
LAB RAT and MINION are from Costume-Con 26, which will be in 2008 in San Jose. kproche and bovil ordered them in 2004, for their Evil Genius bid theme, and those were printed up a large sans-serif typeface; then they ordered more in 2006 after they'd won their bid, and those were in the condensed serif font that gets on so many of their ribbons. At conzilla we talked about their ribbon needs, and Andy was interested in the possibilities of fancy ribbons (he likes Friz Quadrata). They've ordered fancy ones that will be ready in time for laconiv. I told him we should put a rubber ducky on the "Lather" fancies, if and when he wants them.
