Can't buy me love, love. Can't buy me love. I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend

Ribbon update: I've sent in the art for new ribbons, and ordered those that will have gold or silver printing. I'll be sending in the rest of them (those with copper, red, blue, or green printing) shortly. So if you've paid me for ribbons, they're in progress.

For L.A.con IV, I put together an exhibit of Unofficial Ribbons at L.A.con IV. These 170+ ribbons were on display or were donated for the exhibit by the end of the convention... )

Not every unofficial ribbon handed out at the convention ended up in the exhibit. If you have one of the missing ones that you can spare, I'd love to add it in.

Footnotes

  1. The LASFS table had blank white ribbons and colored pens to make your own ribbons.

  2. Erik V. Olson handed out blank grey and black ribbons, as a joke about hard-to-read and "officially blank" ribbbons.

  3. Glenn Glazer produced ribbons in Japanese. Basically they say "I'm going to in Yokohama in 2007."

  4. The line between official and unofficial ribbons was fuzzy at L.A.con IV. Some department heads personally paid for ribbons that related to their department, with or without the official rocket/starburst logo, such as the several styles including CHAOS RULES! FNORD and Prop Master that Jerome Scott gave out in conjunction with various exhibits. Some other departmental ribbons were official but didn't have the logo, such as www.laconiv.org which I gave to people who helped with the convention's online presence. And finally, the convention paid for some ribbons that were downright silly (or were an in-joke from the Exec Committee meetings) such as Dry Snacks and bright & well-read. Some of these will be in whatever official exhibit gets put together somewhere down the line.

  5. There were a few ribbons that didn't get handed out to any members even though they were donated into the exhibit. I believe Beefcake and Runs with Scissors are in this category.

  6. A number of ribbons had duplicates in different styles, but they had the same meaning or purpose. For example, Lawrence M. Schoen had Buffalito Wrangler in different colors; Menolly at the Information desk had fancy italic flexible ribbons as well as plain standard-typeface all-caps FLEXIBLE ribbons. We have one sample of each in the exhibit. (compare to note 7)

  7. There are two "Eric in the Elevator" ribbons in the exhibit because they have two different meanings. One color is for cast/crew, the other for guests on the show: people who've wandered into the elevator during the taping of a show. (compare to note 6)

  8. There were five memorial ribbons circulating at L.A.con IV. Apart from the rich brown ribbon, the 9,000 Ice Teas No Lemon ribbon was in memory of Michael Mason, What Would Joe Do? was for Joe Mayhew; and the convention issued Frankie and Howard ribbons.

  9. The Fan Gallery exhibit didn't get set up. I had these to hand out, but only distributed one or two FAN GALLERY HELPER and see me in the FAN GALLERY ribbons.

  10. Kim Kofmel had several other Friend of Kim ribbons in this series, such as SIG.Shop and SIG.Evil; these four are the only ones we have in the exhibit.

  11. Even though the convention announced that we'd be using horizontal-format ribbons, a few of the ribbons at the convention were in the vertical format. I collected these four: CLUE, I DONATED TO LOCKS OF LOVE, STAR TREK 40TH ANNIVERSARY, and WORLDCON BID COLUMBUS 2008. (The ribbon that says VERTICAL was in horizontal format.)

EDIT: corrected notes about Cheescake and TUCKERIZED (again).

EDIT: Corrrected note about SelinaWoman.
Added BWB, Gryffindog, HUGO LOSER, LOVELY PARTING GIFT, Solar Spice & Liquors Co. 2006 and VERTICAL.
