And the days grow short... Michael Mason, RIP
[Michael Mason, RIP] Michael Mason found dead in his apartment tonight, 04-Jan-2005. Now you know as much as I do.

EDIT: Memorial service details (Sunday, 23 January, 6pm) are in a follow-up comment.

Michael was in charge of the LASFS library for many years. Not a trained librarian, he did what he could, and he had a love for the LASFS Library nonetheless. LASFS used to purchase its NESFA Press books by way of Bruce Pelz, and when Bruce died Michael Mason joined NESFA expressly to continue that arrangement. Now who will buy our books?

Michael was a habitual Worldcon attendee, and his collection of Worldcon t-shirts was one he was proud of. He had enough to wear a clean Worldcon t-shirt every day. He chaired Loscon a year ago, and "helped" with the Loscon program most recently.

He was also one of the people I'd talked TAFF strategy with, and helped me convince myself I wanted to run.

Ow. Ow. Ow. He was so sweet. I wish I had gotten the opportunity to get to know him better. I'm glad I spent time with him when I did at SMOFcon and TorCon.

Anything I could say about Michael, has been said by many before: he was sweet, a do-er, traveled and enjoyed his vacations, and did things for the Good of Fandom.

He was too young to go...

Jeez. Michael was a good guy. I enjoyed seeing him at cons and discussing all the latest gossip. Argh. My best to all those who were closer to him than I was.

Chaz, can you let me know when/where there will be a memorial service? I've been rather disconnected from LASFS for the past several years.

You can either respond here or send me e-mail.

Will Lasfasians Please Stop Dying?

(Link)
Oh no, not another one! This is getting scary, particulary in our own generation. Pournelle was saying just yesterday at Kelly Freas' funeral that it's getting lonely, staying alive while your peers are all passing away. I'm beginning to understand.

Please lets do take better care of ourselves, and each other.

Message received from my friend Joan Steward: "Hi,
I am really depressed at Michael's passing. I don't want to be alone this evening. The suggestion is to meet at Corals about 7ish.
Joan
p.s. I am not suppressing the address list so if I miss someone, you can forward."

Coral's Cafe is in Burbank, on Burbank Blvd. East of the 170, west of I-5.

He probably died shortly after Christmas. The coroner is expected to release the body to the family Wednesday at noon. The likelihood is that the funeral will be Thursday. More details to follow.

I have lost a true friend.....

(Link)
Michael and I go way back, to the first time we met at a Time Meddler meeting, back in the late 80's, and we went through some interesting adventures together.

I will miss him so much. He took me to a New Years Day party, where I met my future wife. I will hold him personally responsible for that one (LOL).

As soon as we find out when the services are going to be, I will be there.

Michael will be missed. It was always good to talk with him at cons. Definitely feeling my mortality again. There's been way too many people younger than me passing away in the last couple of years.

Lousy New Year

(Link)
I will always think of Michael Mason as the seemingly shy guy in the corner who always had something to say about one thing and another. He meant well, he did what he could to help others and I'm always going to be wondering why I don't see him at the con suite and room parties, until I remember...

Oh, yeah - and now I'm really going to lean on my husband to get his diabetes in control, dammit.

Sniff. I'm still in shock. This soooo wasn't "supposed" to happen.

I have fond memories of Michael. He was one of those folks I always looked forward to running into at various cons.

I'm almost in tears

(Link)
I've known Michael for around 17 years. Through all the cons and Re-faire (which I got him hooked on and used to make his costumes), he was always a good-hearted person. I had lost contact with him since moving up to Silicon Valley but saw him in the crowd at Loscon in 2004 but didn't get to talk to him, thinking that I would run into him at BayCon. I have to admit to feeling guilty about taking for granted that I'd see him again, and of course, now I won't. God bless Michael, thank you for allowing me to walk on part of the path of your life.

Mike Mason

(Link)
Although I've had contact with Mike Mason over the years, through Time Meddlers and LASFS, he seemed a very nice person. He was a talker but I think it was more from anxiety than anything else. I just talked to him at LOSCON and he was in good health as far as I could see, so this is quite a shock.

He will be missed.

Funeral arrangements: Sunday, 9 January

(Link)
Jennifer Waltzer writes:

I apologize for having to send this in an email, but the last few days have just been a bit too overwhelming to call everyone. For those of you who have not heard, my brother Michael died some time last week, most likely of a diabetic coma. He was 44. He was found in bed in his apartment by some of his friends on Monday night. We will not have the final coroner's report for a few weeks.

For those who would like to attend the funeral, it will be held on Sunday, January 9 at Mount Sinai Los Angeles Memorial Park, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, at 11 am. (near Griffith Park) Here is a link to directions if you need them: http://mt-sinai.com/basic_info.html.

Following the service and burial you are welcome to join us at the home of my parents, Jean and David Mason, 811 Wellesley Ave, Los Angeles 90049. We will provide maps with directions to those attending the funeral.

My parents and I want to thank everyone who has called with their condolences and offers of help and support. It is a great comfort to know that Michael was well loved by so many. We are still somewhat in a state of shock, and there is still so much to do to wind up the affairs of someone who was in the middle of his life.

Anyone who wishes to may share their memories and thoughts of Michael during the funeral service, or otherwise with us at another time. We welcome any knowledge of his life as he lived it. His co-workers were kind enough to give us a photo of him from their Halloween party last year.

Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone you feel would want to know. I know I am missing a lot of email addresses.

Thanks.

Jennifer

Chaz, I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you over and over again for your photos. I learned the hard way when my father passed away in 2003 that you can NEVER have enough photos of the ones you love, and when something so tragic and unexpected like this happens, we are grateful that we can rely on you to be able to provide us with some happy memories.

So thank you, thank you, thank you.

I am sorry to hear of Michael's passing. I had rarely spoken to him. I have been in and out of lasfas. He was a kind soul. I remember him teasing me occationally. Nothing mean of course. I think he was one of the few people in Lasfs that actually remembered my name. I am sad that we lost such a good person. May he rest in peace and his family find comfort in the love his friends have for him.

I had a great time at LOSCON last year (despite my post-con griping) and a major part of it was meeting Michael who was SO enthusiastic about having Jack as his fan GOH, and he was so sweet and funny to talk to.

I particularly remember his comic gripe about just missing major snowstorms at northern cons.

I was surprised I didn't hear from him when Jack got sick and now, sadly, I know why. Steven and I are sorry he's gone.

Sorry to hear his passing

(Link)
From Deirdre Saoirse Moen

I have never really known him well, but the interactions I've had with him over many years have shown that he was always willing to pitch in and be there. I remember seeing him 20 years ago.

We talked for a long time at Smofcon about how we got into fandom and volunteering -- and we talked about people we'd known for forever. It was really the first time I'd had a deep conversation with someone who was clearly someone I should have gotten to know many years earlier.

I'm so sorry to hear that he's gone.

Michael's shuffling off this mortal coil

(Link)
This is James R. Terry, Jr. aka Jim Terry,
I have known Michael for about 27 years, the only other person who has known him as long is david Keller. I recieved the news about Michael's passing that evening from Deanna and then Dave and much later Steve Smyth. I am currently living out in the Coachella Valley (Palm Springs area) so me getting to Los Angeles is car and money dependant (I had a major car repair and I am too broke to be at today's wake for him - gas money you know.).
Having been a friend to Michael for so long, to hear of his passing has brought tears. Michael has done many things for me and with me. As stated in Kory Doyle's post, we went to the Renaissance Faires together, always was with him at cons, occasionally sharing a room, LASFS, and other parties and fannish type events. I have missed out because of my location, but I am going to try to make it to Gallifrey One to see friends and say goodbye to an old friend. My email address is admrljrt@hotmail.com, feel free to email me as I check my email daily. I miss Michael more than anyone knows. In spite of my occasionally teasing him about his long windedness, he knew I meant no malice. I have been reading the posts and my contact lenses keep fogging from the tears. Michael was in my "inner circle" of friends, whixh sounds elitist but I am sure everyone has those few friends they would know for life. I will miss him at cons, LASFS and of course just parties. Thanks for listening,
Jim
