...The celebrated Mr. K. performs his feat on Saturday at Bishopsgate...
Ribbon update. If you're bringing your own ribbons to [info]laconiv, would you be willing to donate one sample of each title to an exhibit I'm putting together, please? (Mail to Chaz Baden, PO Box 17522, Anaheim CA 92817-7522.) If you've asked me to order some for you, I'll ask you this question when your order comes in; I'm trying to reach everyone who's ordered ribbons on their own. Thanks by the way to M.S. for promising to donate "Burning Fan" and "Gnome" (and others) to the exhibit.

Typically a Worldcon saves one of each type of the official ribbons it purchases, and puts them in the archive box; then sometime before the next year's convention, someone goes through and makes a coherent exhibit piece out of it. It occurred to me, that since there are so many ribbons being brought for silly or promotional or silly promotional purposes, there would be enough to fill up a standard exhibit board with them. So I'm asking for help. I'll throw in one each of the ones I'm bringing...

It'll be a straight alphabetical list; no room for explaining where each one comes from, or how you'd go about getting one yourself. So seeing the exhibit would be like passing someone in the hall who's acquired a whole chestful-plus of ribbons, except you can't ask him or her where they came from. (There will be a small explanatory paragraph, and a note about the principal suppliers of ribbons to fannish conventions. If you'd like to suggest a company that you've used besides RV, Hodges, Parker, or American Meeting Supply please let me know!)

Meanwhile, here's part 18 in my complete story about ribbons I've ordered before.

pawprint

  • SHOT BY A BEAR
  • NO, I DON'T KNOW WHERE CHAZ IS
I ordered a bunch of "Shot by a Bear" in 2003, four times all told. I kept deciding I needed to have more on hand, culminating in an order for 500 of the silly things. As I mentioned in my Armadillocon report, when I was invited to be Fan Guest of Honor I decided to make a project out of trying to shoot everyone at the convention. Since I wear my bear ears at cons, "shot by a bear" seemed a natural tagline. I used to have pawprint stickers; I would either hand out "Shot by a bear" ribbons, or the paw print sticker, to anyone wearing a badge when I took their picture. (If they asked nicely and I had both with me, I might give them both.)

So for Armadillocon, I left the stickers at home, and just brought the ribbons. I believe the ribbons I brought were the only ones on anyone's badges.

The "Shot by a bear" ribbons are almost all used up; I still have a few, but not a lot. I've been waffling back and forth about whether to reorder them. If I do, I'm thinking I might include a paw print on the ribbon, because when McGraw-Hill bought out Trend Basic, they discontinued the paw print stickers. I have ten paw print stickers left on my last sheet. I found some little bear stickers, but it's not the same, not really...

And the "No, I don't know where Chaz is" ribbons were ordered these in 2003 for [info]library_lynn, my lovely wife. It's the usual answer to one of the common questions she gets while at conventions. (I get the same question too, a lot of the time -- that's why I often answer my cell phone by declaring my location. "Ring, ring" -- "Standing in the lobby, this is Chaz.") The original plain text ribbons are almost gone; we've ordered some fancy ones for Worldcon (similar to the "Plays well with others" ribbons, if you've seen them).

  • Cult of Johanna 1st Degree
  • Cult of Johanna 2nd Degree
  • Cult of Johanna 3rd Degree
  • Cult of Johanna 4th Degree
Johanna Mead is either a friend of [info]kproche and [info]bovil, or figured out from my LJ posts that I was the go-to guy for ribbons, or both. Or someone talked about it at BASFA meetings. (Actually, I know she's on LJ, so I think that was how it happened.) Anyhow, we talked about these, and printed them in time for her to hand out this year at [info]baycon. (Barely in time; I dropped them off at the Doubletree when I arrived in San Jose after midnight Friday night.)

She handed out one of the "1st Degree" and several of the rest to her friends, with instructions to wear the "1st Degree" and pass on the "2nd Degree" and the remainder to other people. A "six degrees of separation" kind of thing. I believe she ordered 20 of the 1st, 40 of the 2nd, 60 of the 3rd, and 80 of the 4th. Johanna, if you're listening and you want to do it again, I thought of an approach for laying out the ribbons that would be somewhat less work for the ribbon ladies and would make niftier-looking ribbons; also, you might want to go for 20, 40, 80, and 160 so that each 1st/2nd/3rd-degree person gets to hand out a stack of ribbons to two people.

You have my permission to add "Dancing Fool" and "Friend of JohnO" ribbons to the display. Though technically the "Friend" permission from C.

I'd give you permission to add my ribbons, but I won't be at LACon, so it's really a moot point. :)

It might drive people nuts trying to figure out where "Ribbonthulhu" comes from, if the only one of those ribbons is the one on the board.

Hmmmm.....

I have sneaky plans on trying to get to Anahiem by hard ways for at least one day, however if I get caught or don't make it, would you please give yourself one of my SelinaWoman KISS ribbons and then take one for the archive? That way I will be at worldcon, a little anyway! :)

Kiss Lynn & Maria for me too, I will pass out other klsses with instructions to wear tham at the con in my absence!

So that means my order total will be 96 and that's fine with me!

I asked. It was a bad time to ask but I am glad I got verification, we will be on "vacation" for the entire con.
So, thank you so much, but I have to let go.

If you could drop the leftovers in the mail to me please, I'd appreciate it. My mailing address is on the business card (or look above).

I've decided to keep them on my roster; you've convinced me that the ambiguity's a good thing.

Could I ask you to mail me a sample, please? I'd like to get as many of them as possible glued into place before I get to the con.

Speaking of which, are you bringing Casa de What?, Stack the Brix or Easy Target to hand out?

Thanks; how about the other one? (Will you be handing out both cast and crew ribbons at L.A.con IV?)

I'm thinking of getting a big plexiglas or clear acrylic sheet, and sticking the ribbons to them and displaying them that way...

*Waves*

I'm all for doing it again this time for six degrees, although I was thinking about just doing an equal amount of 1 - 6 ribbons which would mean that people would only get one "set" to hand down, but would be less tricksy for them, too.

I kid you not, some people got confused by having X 2nd degree ribbons and 2X 3rd degree, etc, etc.

I doubt I'll have the dosh to do this again before BayCon (*maybe* Silicon if hubby gets a job next week) so I'm not in a terrible rush.

That all said, I'm keen on hearing your ideas, as you were muy helpful last time around.

I'm also kicking around a change to the text, but I'm not even going to get into that just yet, as your idea might knock my socks off. :)

Separation, and explaining the bit

Well. See, we can buy these little bags; I use them for my own ribons. They're 3x5, perfect for holding ribbons. They're stock number 5ZW32 from Grainger, for example.

Get two of these bags. You put two 4th and a 3rd in each; those two bags, plus a 2nd, is what the 2nds will be giving the 3rds. When the 3rd receives the bag, they put on their own ribbon and give the two 4th ribbons to someone else. There might even be a slip of paper (the size of a business card) in the bag explaining this.

Now, Grainger also sells 4x6 bags. Stock 5ZW34. Each 2nd gets a 4x6 bag, which contains their own 2nd ribbon and the two 3x5 bags that they'll be handing out to the 3rds. And there might be a note (perhaps on a 3x5 index card) telling them what to do.

Every "1st" will get two of those 4x6 bags and his or her 1st ribbon. (They might all be contained inside a 6x9 bag with a note; or, since you know how the deal works, you might just carry around a stack of 4x6 bags and a 3x5 bag containing the 1st ribbons. You give them the ribbon for the badge, and tell them to hand out the 4x6 bags to two friends.)

Packaging, it's all about packaging...

As it happens, the bags are cheap, a few cents each, and I have some of them in stock myself; my co. has a Grainger account, so if I don't have one of the bag types myself I can get them. I'll cheerfully pass my expenses onto you.

Now about the idea for next time. Observe.
Friend of Kim....Friend of Kim....Friend of Kim....
Imagine, if you will, that the stuff on the right is printed with their standard typeface -- how they printed your ribbons, but all they'd set by hand would be "2nd Degree" (1st, 3rd, 4th).

But on the left, would be "CULT of JOHANNA." Possibly in the same typefaces as what I've done here. Or perhaps in your own personal favorite typefaces. That part would be etched onto a metal plate, which they could treat as a single piece of type. This would be easier for the ribbon ladies to produce, because they'd only have to handle that piece plus "1st Degree" to set your ribbons. Visually, it would also be more interesting...

I have a couple of Armadillocon badges knocking around here with "Shot by a bear" ribbons. Mine, and my daughter's. :) They were most appreciated. (She'll appreciate hers later, when she's old enough to appreciate the collection of con badges I've been accumulating for her....)

Suggest getting an old towel. (Or pick one up for fifty cents at a thrift store.) Pin/attach all of her ribbons to them, starting at the top, in chronological order. Keep it someplace safe... maybe attach it to the inside of a little-used closet door or something.
