"...Feel like running and dancing for joy, for I'm loved by a pretty wonderful boy..." EDIT: If you're going to tell me my website's a little broken, I know, I know... they're working on it.
More about Costume College. (Incidentally, long-time followers of my LJ will note that I'm breaking my usual rule into flinders about trying not to post more than once per day...) Most of the convention runs smooth like clockwork, they've been doing it for a while. There are a number of L.A. "usual suspects", some with obvious costuming connections (Jess and Malcolm). They use vertical format ribbons, which makes sense because they only have a few of them. Most people had no more than one vertical ribbon (such as "New member") and if you position the sticky end in the middle instead of the bottom edge of the back it's easy to hang your horizontals in front. The unofficial ribbons are starting to spread. The costume_con Pre-Convention Hall Costume Award ribbons, the Sunday Undies ribbons that collency had (and the very rare Two stitches forward one stitch back)... I handed out Shot by a Bear to the people I shot, outside of the Gala/Tea rushes. I had my kit with me, but didn't end up delegating any ribbons. Maybe next time we meet someone will want to hand out Live Journal ribbons?
Speaking of ribbons: If anyone has ordered from a ribbon company that accepts online orders, and you're happy with the results, and it's not one of these five: rvawardsaz.com, hodgesbadge.com, ribbonsgalore.com, shopforawards.com, or marcomeetings.com can you let me know please? I want to update my Ribbon Resource page...
library_lynn played minion for me for a little while during the Tea, following me with the notebook taking down names (and quick notes about the costume they wore to help matching 'em up) so I could move person-to-person that much more quickly. Very helpful! If anyone wants to be my minion at the next convention I shoot at, look me up. I met Kirsten Manning, a beginning costumer from Alaska. (Reminded me of Kat H., but in a good way.) She helped me with the stuffing-envelopes stage. I hope she met a few new friends at the convention. If she's into anime she might want to see how easy it is to get to Anime Evolution in Vancouver weekend after next, or Aurora-Con in Anchorage next month.
The dealers room ("Marketplace") was busy most times I stopped by. I think that's where people tended to go between classes. Some would trickle down to the Costume Exhibit, as I mentioned, but I think the dealers room had more traffic. It looked like they assigned space by taping rectangles on the floor. We're going to do that next year at animelosangeles. I didn't take a lot of pictures there, partly because I didn't spend a lot of time there, but mostly because it was too crowded to take many photos without inconveniencing the other shoppers.

You've got your mother in a whirl ('cause) she's not sure if you're a boy or a girl. Like many of my friends from animelosangeles, I'm getting ready for Anime Expo. A lot of L.A. fans are heading up to "Baycon Jr." but I'll be down here in Long Beach.
Tomorrow evening (Thursday) I plan to stop by the Hyatt and give the front desk a 2-lb. box of See's Chocolates, to encourage them not to mess with the blocking on my room and ask for an early check-in. Then I'll head up to LASFS, pick up Christian, do the Coral thing for a couple of hours and then print off a "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" poster or two at the house when I drop him off.
Friday morning it's off to the con. And I've learned that there's apparently a free wi-fi hot zone in downtown Long Beach in the Pike/Convention Center area, so I hope to post a message on the animelosangeles forum when I'm all checked in...
I'll be spending most of the days (Fri/Sat/Sun) in my room. It'll be a daytime open room party -- a mock con suite -- and if all goes as planned, I'll have a room on the same floor as the front desk and not far from the elevators. (I'll also have five roommates, but I'm trying to convince most of them to shower at night so that the bathroom's clear for library_lynn in the mornings.)
That's the daytime. Friday night is the "Anime Conventions Mailing List" dinner. As most-local person on the list attending, I'm organizing it. (ACML is the anime equivalent of the SMOFS mailing lists. There are a handful of us in common on both lists.) At this point we're the only two folks from a California convention going to the dinner. There are people from Anime Evolution (Vancouver B.C.), Anime Vegas, El Paso Anime Convention, Otakon (Baltimore), Sakura-Con (Seattle), Kevin from Robotech and Lynn and myself from animelosangeles (assuming Lynn makes it out to Long Beach after work in time).
And Saturday night is the Masquerade Ball. I've been in contact with the lead DJ in charge -- "DJ Jinrei", who's in charge of our Saturday night dance next year at Animé Los Angeles! ( He's tentatively accepted my offer to take and print instant ''prom photos.'' )
I did this four years ago at AX's "Starlight Fantasy Ball," and I did something similar at two weddings and Torcon 3. This time around I'm printing on bigger cards, instead of the little business cards. Last time at AX 2003, I only had 30 photos from the formal dance, so I'm not anticipating a huge rush of people interested in the photos. (I'll make sure I have card stock for 100, just in case.)
I've sketched out the frame that'll print around the photo. I've also whomped out new software to handle it. (Lots of use of GD and I dump everything out to the printer using LP. If anyone out there is horribly interested, I can share the source code or OS/X executables.) My new printer is a lovely beast, but printing out lots of high-resolution images using a USB link just takes too long. So I've set up my programs to reduce the photos to 200 dpi and print them that way. In my tests tonight, I was able to process and print 20 photos in under ten minutes, so I'm confident it'll all work on Saturday.
I'll also have model releases for the subjects; they can sign the release and opt-in for having their photos on my website, in which case they can download the high resolution versions after the convention; or they can opt-out, in which case I'll delete their photos as soon as practical and they'll just get the printed ones on-site.
(Oh, and I don't have anything emotionally invested in being the man behind the camera. If there's an accomplished photographer who wants to hang out at the dance Saturday night, I'll take care of the computer end and let you do the shooting. And if you've got a backdrop? Big win all the way around...)
I'm also considering offering envelopes and selling stamps for people who'd like their photo mailed instead of waiting around for them. But seeing as how quickly the photos print on my fab HP 2605, I'm not sure there will be a lot of takers for the stamps. (The envelopes might go quickly, as a convenient way to protect the card.)
Sunday night, the masquerade, at the Long Beach Arena. I know people who'll be on the stage, so I'm hoping to check it out if there's room.
Ribbon note: if you're not on my "ribbons" mailing list, you might be interested to know that the weekend after AX/Westercon is when I'm sending in my next ribbon order, and that's the one to get in on if you want ribbons for NASFiC or Worldcon.
EDIT: I re-uploaded the sample to show an actual photo instead of the colored background. If you don't see fairegoddess's smiling face above, please reload. And here's another sample with two other friendly people to show how it looks sideways.

Come gather 'round people, wherever you roam, and admit that the waters around you have grown
If you want badge ribbons before the 4th of July conventions (Westercon, Anime Expo, etc.), you'd better contact me right away. I'm sending the order in Friday afternoon.
So I ran this convention during the winter, my camera disappeared when I left it in my mother's hospital room, and basically I haven't uploaded a whole lot of photos recently. I just bought a new Canon S3 IS, and glanced at Hazel's Picture Gallery and realized I was 7 months behind in uploading photos.
( I've uploaded a large number of photos just in the past few weeks... )
Now I'm going to work on catching up with all of the photo captions that have been submitted, and the ones that you guys are about to bombard me with. Then I'll work on rotating pictures that are off by 90 degrees (or 180). If you are browsing the photos and note that the photo is off by 90 degrees, you can let me know via the caption-correction form (scroll down from the large viewing-size photo). One rotation-reminder page is sufficient, because I'll be looking at the entire page when I get to it.

Down at an English fair, one evening I was there, when I heard a showman shouting underneath Maria, library_lynn and I went to Faire. We all dressed up -- Maria's made some new garb for her and Lynn. We had a nice time, although I did get a bit dehydrated by the end of it all. Next time I need to bring a bigger basket that will hold more water. And perhaps find my adventure hat for better shade, my muffin hat doesn't really do the trick.
Badge ribbons are due in later this week. Anyone who's looking for ribbons for a July, August, or Labor Day convention, you need to start thinking about what exactly you want. If you want to piggyback on one of my orders, let me know.
( I've heard about two more custom-ribbon manufacturers that might be worth looking into. )

Ribbon story part 39. Five more plain ribbons and one fancy, ordered in time for
laconiv by different individuals.
- We are all Bonobos
- I'm a Question Authority
- ISoeWFGoH
- Sterilized with Fear!
- Secret Master of Foodism
- THIS RIBBON intentionally left blank
A fan came up to me at ConZilla and said he wanted ribbons with
We Are All Bonobos printed on them. It has something to do with
us all being monkeys at the core. He's ordered more since L.A.con IV,
in fact, so I guess they were popular.
Ruth Temple wanted I'm a Question Authority, to give to people
who know everything.
Andrew Porter asked for ISoeWFGoH ribbons. He's been running ads
in Worldcon program books sponsored by the "International Society of
ex-Worldcon Fan Guests of Honor" and wanted ribbons to hand out to the
other members of that select group.
Julie Zetterberg's Sterilized with Fear! referred to a masquerade
entry that was based on the recent B-movie "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra"
with the tagline: You'll be Sterilized with Fear!
Kathryn Daugherty ordered plain
Secret Master of Foodism ribbons, to give to other foodies.
And James Daugherty joined the self-referential ribbon bandwagon with
fancy
THIS RIBBON intentionally left blank ribbons, which I laid out with
Clarendon Extended/Clarendon Condensed to make an interesting layout at a
slightly smaller size. He had them done with grey/silver, to make the
lettering slightly less conspicuous.

Change your heart. Look around you. Change your heart. It will astound you. I need your loving
Ribbon story part 38. Some more plain ribbons, ordered in time for
laconiv. There were about fifty people ordering a hundred
different titles last summer. Here are a few more.
- Chris for TAFF
- Dancing Fool
- minion of Karisu-Sama
- Want some toast?
- TEA SNOB
- (LJ head and line)
There were, as I've mentioned before, a lot of plain ribbons ordered
last summer. That doesn't mean they were all pedestrian, it just means that
they were hand-set by the ribbon ladies instead of turned into a single plate.
For example,
johnnyeponymous wanted ribbons that said Chris for TAFF in support of his
TAFF candidacy. (The TAFF race was cancelled, so he didn't get it.)
And johno wanted Dancing Fool ribbons, in an easy-to-read-on-the-dance-floor
color combination, to hand out as he went along.
Former animelosangeles FGoH karisu_sama wanted a ribbon to give
to her minions that says Minion of Karisu-Sama.
And young kiuricumber wanted ribbons with her catchphrase of the moment, Want
some
toast? to hand out at the Worldcon. (You'll recall that two posts ago, I talked about her
father's five or six different ribbon titles. She didn't want to be left out, and she saved up
her own money to pay for these.)
chaoswolf caught me on AIM (my handle is the same as it is here) and ordered some
ribbons on behalf of her mom, flower_cat. She (mom) often stakes out a place in the
lobby at conventions and wait for the members to come her way, and now she has something to
share with everyone who happens to be a TEA SNOB too.
It seems that a lot of fandom is on Livejournal -- it's not just for British fanzine fans
anymore. cogitationitis wasn't happy with the "LiVE JOURNAL" ribbons (which were
inspired by johno's badges, btw). She prefers just having the LJ head with a
line where you can write in your LJ handle. (Incidentally, if you're given a choice, use a gel pen,
not a felt-tip.) The amazing fairegoddess drew a
version of the head for us, and Lisa liked it enough to order a bunch. We have the plate
on file for future reprints, if anyone's interested.
I think the one I've got here is the wrong one. I'll check when I get to work.

Ribbon story part 37. Some more plain ribbons, ordered in time for laconiv.
- FABU!
- Sign!
- I smell a Euchre!
- Right Bower
- Left Bower
- Nine Offsuit
Dave McCarty, of the Chicago in 2008 Worldcon Bid, ordered a number of ribbons. Some of them were for the bid,
others were in-jokes for midwestern fandom. I think. I really don't know what FABU! and Sign! mean, actually.
For FABU!, I had RV Awards use their big block letters. All the other ribbons listed here were printed using the
usual upper-lower roman.
Helen Montgomery (Dave's honey) ordered I smell a Euchre! ribbons. And Erik V. Olson wanted
Right Bower, Left Bower, and Nine Offsuit, which are all
euchre references. Euchre is a popular card game
played at Chicago conventions such as Windycon and Capricon.

- Panlogos
- Hall Singer
- Cool Hat Club
- Ear Club for Fen
- Skull Squad
( While most people who ordered ribbons in time for the Worldcon ordered just one or two titles, a handful of people were sparking off ideas left and right. )

Ribbon story part 35. Some plain ribbons with rocket/starburst
for laconiv.
- Art Show Staff
- Registration
- Green Room Staff
- Masquerade Staff
- Performances Staff
- Space Cadet Game Staff
The L.A.con IV decided, in its inscrutable collective wisdom, that
there would be "Committee" ribbons, but no ribbons that said simply
"Staff." Almost as soon as this decision was handed down, many
departments petitioned their respective division heads for
"(Department) Staff" ribbons.
The first ribbons ordered for laconiv (not counting the
"Space Cadet" promotional ribbons) were the Art Show Staff ones
that
Bobbi ordered
from me at Conzilla. She picked the pastel rainbow ribbon, with red
printing. Not long after that, Elayne put me in charge of all of the
sub-100 ribbon orders, plus a handful of the hundreds too.
Registration ordered their own ribbons. And the Program
Division
ordered a whole slew of "XYZ Staff" ribbons for their departments. (See
also previous post.)
Program Division had at least 10 different "XYZ Staff" titles for
their division, including
Green Room Staff,
Masquerade Staff,
Performances Staff and
Space Cadet Game Staff,
plus many others that didn't use the word
"staff."
I'm kind of surprised that they followed through with the "no STAFF ribbons" rule, actually. I would suggest that future conventions (esp.
Worldcons) might take a note of what happened here...

the Young Adults program, for two days anyway: jamesb and Elvis

selinawoman wanted Runs with Scissors. We printed them as plain
ribbons, and she handed out one or two to people attending L.A.con IV. She didn't make
it to the convention, so there weren't very many of these around.
Cafeteria Lady was the official ribbon for Con Suite staffers, so it was in
short supply at the con too. (Not many people running the Con Suite that year.) It was a

The city streets are empty now. (The lights don't shine no more.) And so the songs are way down ...
Ribbon story part 26, continuing where I left off last year.
Last summer I put in 9 orders of various ribbons, ranging from 1000 to 2300
ribbons per order. (If you want to skip ahead to my
Ribbon Gallery
page, last year's "Worldcon orders" were orders #32 through #40.)
Overall, I shepherded just over 13,000 ribbons. They were a mix of official
and unofficial ribbons (and some quasi-official or semi-official ones), and
there were some plain, some fancy, and many mixed -- plain plus the
rocket/starburst slug.
Here
are some of the fancy ribbons from last summer's season of ribbon madness.
Each uses a single typeface to help get its message across.

All of the time in a tropical clime where they do the hula hula dance I fell in love with a turtle The little news: My "ribbons" mailing list is humming along nicely. Fifty people are tuned in, and I've been sending out an update every Friday. If you want ribbons for Baycon or FanimeCon (or anything else on Memorial Day Weekend) there's about a week left to tell me what you want, after which you'll be on your own. (I'll be posting URLs for four different companies you can order custom badge ribbons from, so you can still get something done on a rush basis. They just won't be as pretty.) To subscribe to the list, send e-mail to ribbons-subscribe@lists.bostonbaden.com .
Anecdote of the week: ann_totusek asked me, what's in those packages I keep sending to weirdchic862? Apparently she didn't know I've been contributing to the Skirt of Many Ribbons. Every time I get a ribbon order, if RV Awards gives me extra ribbons or if I have permission to pull one out, I've been sending samples to her. Megan tells me she's about halfway done, and to keep them coming. It makes me wish I'd be at baycon -- I'd set up a box for ribbon donations. ("Donate your old excess ribbons, such as the ones on your badge from last year, and get a special exclusive ribbon for this year's badge.") If anyone wants to do that on her/my behalf, let me know, please!
In my last post, I talked about Buck Rogers. I didn't mention that I felt guilty about the family's copy getting ruined -- the reason it was in the garage is undoubtedly because I or my brother left it there instead of bringing it back into the house when we were reading it last, 20 years ago. I couldn't take the family being without it, so I bought another copy on Ebay.
( And the big news is colleency's retirement... )
