Turn around and smell what you don't see
Last night in town -- tomorrow afternoon it's off to Tulsa again. This will be Tulsa trip #4. If I'm lucky, there won't be any tornados this week. Gotta drive up to TMI's house and drop off flyers for Demicon, because while I'll only be a few hundred miles from Des Moines, there's no way I'm going to skip work on Friday. I have too preciously few days in Tulsa to work with our engineer to do that. (Mind you, we won't be working on the weekend. Should I drive up Saturday? I know it's not as close to Tulsa as KC...)

While I'm in Tulsa, I'm hoping to meet up with an artist or two that I want to recruit for L.A.con IV (2006 World Science Fiction Convention). I need "Space Cadets" art and fillos, for the flyers and also for the website. On the website, I have (so far) been able to put up a different "Space Cadets" picture on the main splash page every month. I even have one (by Terrie Smith) lined up to go live on May 1, so I'm happy about that. And if I don't find another by the end of May, I can always put up another photo of someone dressed as a Space Cadet...

I'm also on the lookout for recruits for L.A.con IV Fan Publicity (my department) in general. I need help wiith some basic flyer publicity, HTML maintenance, and hanging out at parties. Want to be one of my minions? Contact me in the usual way...

News on Hazel's Picture Gallery - I've started working on that database I promised myself. I'm running my slurp-in-all-the-HTML program again, and populating that thar database. This is my second pass at defining the data fields I'll need, and I've realized a couple of things - and I'm glad I have the chance to retool some of it.

What am I talking about? The original "read the pages" program was geared towards being able to regenerate the original pages, and that was about it. Now I want to make sure that the database is ready to go when, for example, someone wants to look up a picture. Take picture 0003-3 as an example. If you type in 0003 into the database test gizmo you'll see a bunch of fields come up. You'll learn what the title of page 0003 is, what the image source file is for 0003-3, and so forth. What you won't see is a field called "0003-3caption", but there's a field called "0003-3see" which points us to the base photo that has a caption.

I also have a place to record which picture numbers appear in page 0003. Eventually, when I want to have a photo duplicated elsewhere, I won't need to assign it a different picture number -- it can carry its primary picture number.

As it stands we have almost enough information in the "Picture Database" to make an easy look-up interface that can display a particular picture. All we need to finish it off is to break out the names that show up in the captions. That'll be a little tricky, but ideally I'd like to be able to incorporate the Cross-Reference by Name into the database fully...
